Nikki Dorakis

(1954-2013)

Nikki Dorakis was called Enrico Cortesi when he was born in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. He was a courageous activist, author, musician and psychiatric nurse who was involved in the Gay Rights movement and founded the Campaign for Homosexuality (CHE) group on the Isle of Wight in the 1970s. He arrived home one day to find his pet cat had been killed and left outside his house.

At 55, Dorakis took up writing and published a number of fantasy novels, drawing from his own spiritual beliefs as well as folk tales heard on his wide-ranging travels. He was ordained a Pagan priest in 2011 and he was an ordained minister of the Church of Spiritual Humanism. Dorakis said, “Being an ‘out’ gay male in a rural community certainly makes for an interesting life.”
